USB4 Keychain Cable Guide: SSDs, ProRes & Travel Charging

A USB4 keychain cable makes sense when you need a small cable for a nearby SSD, phone recording rig or power bank, and both devices support the task you want to do. Choose it for its combination of portability and connection capability. Check the distance between ports first, then verify charging power, data speed and video support separately.

The EnergyFort USB4 240W USB-C Keychain Cable is a flat 13cm USB-C-to-USB-C cable with a removable connector holder and metal clip ring. Its listed maximum capabilities are 240W charging, 40Gbps data transfer and 8K at 60Hz video output with compatible equipment. These figures describe different jobs; they do not mean every phone, SSD or monitor will use all of them.

Quick buying answer

  • For a nearby SSD: check the computer port and enclosure speed, then make sure 13cm reaches without tension.
  • For iPhone ProRes: check the supported iPhone model, recording mode, drive format, write speed and power needs.
  • For a power bank: use a compatible USB-C output and rest both devices securely.
  • For a display: verify video output on the source and the required mode across the whole connection path.
  • For everyday carry: seat both connectors in the holder; inspect retention and the cable regularly.

What is a USB-C keychain cable, and what comes with it?

It is a short wired cable that stores as a loop in a holder attached to a clip ring. Remove its two USB-C plugs from the holder to make the connection, then unplug and store them again when finished. The holder provides storage rather than electrical power. You still need a charger, power bank or powered device for charging.

Each EnergyFort color option contains one cable with its holder and clip ring. The main product images show the design in open and stored states. They are not a two-pack offer. Black, White and Yellow use the same listed specifications, so choose a color for visibility or your carry setup rather than expecting a different transfer speed.

Will an external SSD actually transfer at 40Gbps?

Only a compatible end-to-end connection can negotiate the relevant link speed, and file-copy throughput will still depend on the storage and workload. Start with the computer's port specification and the SSD enclosure's interface. A USB-C socket can belong to a slower USB connection. Likewise, a fast SSD inside a slower enclosure remains limited by that enclosure.

A practical example is a drive with a 10Gbps USB interface connected to a faster host: a cable supporting up to 40Gbps does not upgrade the drive's interface to 40Gbps. Copying many small files may also look different from copying a large video file. Avoid turning a headline link speed into a promise that an entire project transfers in a fixed number of seconds.

USB-IF's USB4 overview explains that USB4 shares connection resources between display and data traffic. Its discussion of newer USB4 capabilities does not upgrade this particular cable's listed 40Gbps maximum. Check your actual devices and supported mode.

For a first test, connect the drive directly to the intended host port, confirm the negotiated interface where your system exposes it, and copy a representative file. Remove an unnecessary hub while troubleshooting. Rest the enclosure beside the computer: an SSD should not hang from the cable or load a laptop port.

Can I use it for iPhone ProRes recording to an SSD?

Use it as part of a supported external-storage setup, rather than treating the cable alone as a recording upgrade. The EnergyFort product media illustrates a phone connected to external storage. Before buying, check that your exact iPhone supports the recording mode and external USB-C storage workflow you intend to use.

Apple's ProRes recording requirements cover direct external recording on iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro and 17 Pro models. Apple specifies a USB 3 cable capable of at least 10Gbps, exFAT storage, and sustained write performance of at least 220MB/s for 4K60 or 440MB/s for supported 4K120 recording. Its stated maximum drive power draw is 4.5W. Check the model-specific mode and latest instructions before preparing a shoot.

The cable's listed data capability addresses only one part of that setup. A drive can be detected yet fail to sustain the needed write speed. Mount the SSD securely, leave enough cable slack for the connector angle, and test a recording at the intended settings before relying on it. This guide does not report an independent recording-duration or SSD benchmark test.

Is 13cm long enough for a power bank or mobile rig?

Measure the route between the actual ports with cases, stands and mounts in place. A 13cm cable can keep two nearby devices tidy, but the usable route must account for connector housings and bend direction. A thick case or a raised laptop stand may need more reach than a flat tabletop setup.

Place the phone and power bank side by side for a first fit check. Keep the power bank supported and avoid a tight turn at either connector. If you want to lift the phone freely while its power bank stays on a desk, or reach an outlet across a bed, choose a longer cable. Portability is useful only when the cable reaches comfortably.

When storing the cable, seat both plugs in the holder and check the ring attachment. If retention becomes loose or the cable shows damage, address that before carrying or using it again. Storage convenience is not a promise that the cable cannot be lost or that its holder can support a phone's weight.

Does the 240W label make a phone charge faster?

No. It describes the cable's maximum supported power, not a command to deliver 240W. The power source and device negotiate a compatible charging level. A higher-rated cable cannot raise the output of a smaller adapter or enable an unsupported proprietary phone charging mode.

USB-IF's Power Delivery guidance describes the extended power range that allows up to 240W. Reaching higher-power modes requires the appropriate source and receiving device. For a power bank, read the output specification of the exact USB-C port you are using; input-only ports and shared-port operation can behave differently.

If charging is unexpectedly slow, compare the charger or power bank's specified output with the device's requirements, try a direct connection, and check the device's charging settings and condition. Our 240W USB-C charging troubleshooting guide covers that separate buying and setup problem in more detail.

Can it connect a laptop to an 8K display or two monitors?

The listed video capability is up to 8K at 60Hz with a compatible system. Confirm that the laptop's chosen port outputs video, that the display accepts the required input mode, and that any dock or adapter supports the intended resolution and refresh rate. A USB-C charging port alone does not prove those capabilities.

Two-monitor operation additionally depends on the computer, operating system, graphics support and dock. This cable has two plugs, not two display outputs. For a broader explanation, read USB-C charging power versus video support. Choose a longer cable if the monitor's input is beyond the short cable's comfortable reach.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with every USB-C device?

Check physical access and the task-specific port specification. Matching connector shapes do not guarantee fast charging, 40Gbps data, display output or external video recording.

Is the keychain ring an electrical connector?

No. It attaches the storage holder to a carry point. Charging and data use the two USB-C plugs.

Is it a certified Thunderbolt cable?

The listing describes compatibility with suitable USB4 and Thunderbolt 3/4 setups. This guide does not establish an independent certification record; check any certification requirement separately.

What if an SSD disconnects when I move the phone?

Stop the recording or transfer safely, check the drive mounting and connector fit, and remove tension from the short cable. Also check power and interface requirements. Contact support if instability remains.

Before-you-buy verdict

Choose this cable when the two devices stay close and you want compact carry plus the listed USB4 data and video capability. For charging alone, decide whether those extra capabilities serve your actual setup. For distance, choose a longer cable.
